I wanted to revisit an idea I had for a USS Constitution coin. Eliminating the sails and bringing some of the rigging close, but with a lot of emphasis on the dynamic ocean surface and the force of Old Ironsides moving forward. Spec, sample design.
Pencil, digital. An exercise in showing depth map drawing vs traditional rendering. 19” x 8”
Pencil, digital. Drawing for the portfolio of a proposed FLOTUS coin. 8” x 8”
I wanted to incorporate the flowing lines of classic American coins, but with a harder contemporary feeling. A spec design for my portfolio.
I had to create a design for this man after reading about his life. Someone should mint a coin or create a major movie about him. Nice video from the History guy here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84yGPsehrkc
My 2nd design as an A.I.P. Artist for the US Mint. There were several themes and this one was the Colt firearms production method. The idea was used by button, sewing machine, typewriters and firearms manufacturers. The parts in the design are from patents for those items. I was honored to attend the Hidden Figures Congressional Gold Medals ceremony at Emancipation Hall in the Capital on 09/18/2024. My design was selected for the Reverse of the Dr.Darden CGM. It was a special experience to meet Dr. Darden's extended family and talk for a bit about her career and what the Medal means to all of them.
John P. McGraw did an excellent sculpt. Here it is on the Bronze Medal, which can be purchased from the Mint at -

I was going to do this design for the Larry Doby Congressional Gold Medal. For a couple of reasons I did not. I liked it enough to revisit the concept several years later.

My proposed coin/medal design for US Marshall Bass Reeves. Interesting figure in the history of the western USA after the Civil War.
Before being selected as an A.I.P. Artist for the US Mint, a final group of 40+ were chosen to design either this coin or the last Liberty coin. I was honored to create this historical event and it was this design that made me one of the 16 new A.I.P. Artists contracted by the US Mint in 2019.
A very special part of my career. I will never forget the excitement, challenges and rewards of every design created for every project I was a part of. You can see all the designs for this project here - https://www.usmint.gov/news/ccac-meetings/george-washington-crossing-the-delaware-river-quarter

After photographing common scenes, I digitally manipulated the inherent design elements. These changes create an abstract set of images that aren’t photos in the traditional sense. I’m using Photoshops filters, effects and color shifts to create a new image.
I don’t think I considered myself an illustrator who specialized in mystery paperbacks, but it worked out that way. The prime reason I did this section is because I got a Rolling Stone job, which is at the top of the illustration section. The art director said they called me because I did mystery novels so well. Shocked for several reasons, but that is how the business goes sometimes. R.S. was reviewing Warren Zevon’s album and they wanted a mystery style illustration for the review section.
PS I had another Rolling Stone experience that was so frantic I didn’t even have time to photograph the art… which was not used. Two years earlier.
